Lets start with I can’t speak for every woman. I can only speak for myself. I have (or had) such high hopes for Drake. A really horrible video shouldn’t be able to drown such aspirations, but it did. The very first time I heard that song I was so impressed with it, and Drake. OMG, someone who could actually rap. That doesn’t EVER happen anymore. And the subject matter wasn’t about “Hey Bitch let me stick my dick down your Thoat!” and Thoat wasn’t a typo. He appeared to be a man who actually liked women and not objectified them. Its funny because I thought the same of Kanye. He was doing songs about loving his Mama and the struggle. Now he is dating the bald lesbian stripper and directing videos with dancing breast for no apparent reason. The video is non sensical. “where they do that at?’ Even if he would have been in a club somewhere with some “Ho’s” it still would not have made any sense. Women between the ages of 18-45 are the largest consumers of everything. I wasn’t aware that videos were still being made, I never see them on televison. And I don’t watch the EvIl BET. I had hope for him and he disappointed me. He proved that he is just another “Nigga”. And I don’t mean that in a good way.

  3. Lady Love says:

okay, so he’s just anotha “nigga” huh? He’s young, he’s having fun and he can do what he wants. Thats what the industry is about, almost anything can sell now a days!! Thats all folks!

  4. drake says:

i love your music and i wish i could see
drake i think he has a cute body and hes a very
    cute and attractive guy

  5. beef? says:

I like that he’s taking on the rap career but every time I see him, he’ll always be Jimmy [Degrassi] to me. I’m glad that there are people out there who actually have talent. Don’t crush it!

  6. Kevin Sheaff the dancer says:

  7. Lisa says:

I believe this uproar over the video has taught Drake a huge lesson. Hopefully he’s learned his lesson and will do better next time. I’ll still support him. He’s very talented.

  8. yummie says:

I LOVE DRAKE SOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH AND HIS MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. digitalgirl* says:

“There was an odd, non-sensical plot and half naked, ethnically ambiguous young women with huge breasts bouncing all over the place. What?!? In a rap video?!? Stop.”

I think people are just stunned , you do find this in almost every rap video , but he was a youth actor for the longest time with many youth fans. in degrassi he was a well-rounded smart and sensible teenager , so it might be a shock to see it.

  10. Jada says:

Sell out? Hmmmmmmmmm, think so. But it’s inevitable these days isn’t it?

  11. kaitlyn says:

  12. katrina says:

ever since i saw his video “best i ever had” [&& fell in love with it] i looked at pictures of him. this is the guy from “degrassi” right? the one who plays Jimmy Brooks? i never knew he was a real singer, i thought he just sung in the show..

  13. katrina says:

lol, i just read the comments and i ttly agree with “beef?” grats on being a rapper, but i will always look at him as jimmy from degrassi cuz that is like my fav. show ever.

  14. desii says:

well im not gonna lie i saw his video and i was abit lost, not because of all the ass and tits.. i mean its not like we never see that, its totally normal in the rap industry.. what really surprised me was the fact that i found it had nothing to do with the song.. i was expecting a COMPLETELY different approach to the video expecially since im so use to the cute and sweet Degrassi drake♥ but either way bad video or not.. im not going to start cramping his style i can only hope his next video is better because he is truly talented and i love him and wish him the best.

A source with knowledge drops this: Well I used to stay in Toronto now I’m in NY. Drake and writer Nickelus F. from Virginia used to be seen everywhere in TO together about 6 years ago. He used to have a white Range Rover. He used to fly Nick out and bring him to Raptor games and s**t. If you search hard enough you can find all of these pics.

Drake does have money. He lives in one of the most expensive places in North America. His mother is wealthy. Not rich but wealthy. He was on the show from he was 12/13 years of age. He was getting roughly 90 to 125 k per season for the past 10 years. Realistically when you don’t have any bills or expenses that’s whole lot of money which is why he was able to pay his way into the game. He ran out of money early last year and received money from some investors in Houston, TX. He was in TX a lot because he had a girl out there which is how he met Wayne. Wayne heard his CD ina barber shop in H Town.

Nickelus F. is the one who got Malice on that song with Drake. Drake used to throw a lot of money around to get into the industry which is why him and Trey Songz is cool. When Drake was getting more known in TO he wanted more radio friendly less edgy lyrics so he switched up writers because Canadian audience is really conservative. I know cats from Illusive Media who worked with Nickelus F. and they showed me that Drake paid for many of his videos and things of that nature for the songs he was writing. Also, Nickelus F. hooked him up with many connects in the game especially when he was in talks with Def Jam.

From what I heard from VERY reliable sources in the Drake camp and from NY is that this IQ cat from Brooklyn was negotiating selling songs to Drake. Drake would buy hooks or entire songs (concepts and verses). IQ is Rakim’s protege, his pen game is mean. IQ helped him on a couple of records but Drake got pissed when he wouldn’t give him his personal records that he was gonna use for his own career.

Numerous guys in Toronto have contributed to Drake’s music. Richie Sosa being one of them, not a big collaborator but he did help Drake.

This information wasn’t too confidential because the studio sessions had many people present so everybody saw Drake and 40 asking for the rhymes. Another thing you can ask people is if they’ve EVER seen Drake actually write/think/freestyle/type/ or just overall create a song on the spot. NEVER.

There are possibly others that I don’t know of so I can’t give out any more info. I will leave you with this, Drake is not new, he’s actually paid top dollar for meeting with the biggest industry execs and he was shut down.

  19. I LUV DRAKE HE IS SOOOOO FUCKIN CUTE AND HE HAS A CUTE SMILE AND I LUV HIZ SONGZ AND SEND ME SUM KUMMENTS ON MYSPACE.COM LOL:)

  21. but why? says:

Shelby Powell (author): You are saying there are two options.
    1) Rappers can have videos with “half naked, ethnically ambiguous young women with huge breasts bouncing all over the place.”

    2) Rappers can have “tier Shakespearian narrative” with the “women dressed like librarians or kindergarten teachers”.

interesting. what confuses me here is the term you use: “Hip-Hop”. Baffling.

clearly you have no idea what hip hop is. so then why would you attempt to speak about it?

hip hop is not commercial rap. commercial rap is what you are familiar with as it is what plays on mtv 10 hours a day. commercial rap may consist of the two options you mention in your blog(above).

you mention the two options: the naked women, or the pathetic, boring option of (intellectual?) women. why must there be paraded women at all??? that does not have anything to do with hip hop. what happened to culture? what happened to knowledge? what happened truth? well, mtv has the monopoly.

so if you want to learn what hip hop is, i recommend listening to hip hop. Immortal Technique, Dead Prez, K’naan – you can learn a thing or two about the subject before you attempt to write about it.
